The story of Horizon Zero Dawn is set in a post-apocalyptic United States in the 31st century. Humans live in scattered tribes with varying levels of technological development, while large robotic machines dominate the Earth. The game’s narrative revolves around tribal politics and the aftermath of a cataclysmic robot-apocalypse that wiped out most of humanity.
Your first course of action is to follow Rost and pick up Salvebrush Berries. Anything you can pick up in Horizon Zero Dawn will appear with an obvious symbol over it.
Salvebrush is marked as Medicinal because it will be added to your medicine pouch, which you can quickly access to recover by pressing up on the D-Pad. This will automatically recover your health to full over time. The green bar below your health represents how full your medicine pouch is. Make sure to pick up medicinal items often to keep this pouch, and your health, full throughout your journey. You’ll quickly learn that getting trampled on or smashed into by a machine is no small matter, as your health will quickly be depleted. One wrong step underneath a Tallneck and you’re toast.
Next, do as Rost says and mimic his movements, and you’ll be fine as you crouch with Square and sneak through the tall grass. Watch the Stealth Symbol to see how visible you are.
Rocks are also noted as gatherable items by a white symbol. Gather them with Triangle as you would other items. They’ll then appear as a usable item on your D-pad inventory on the bottom left of your screen.
Along with Metal Shards, you also need to collect Ridge-Wood. These plants are abundant in the world, especially near water. You’ll be able to absentmindedly pick up Ridge-Wood and be well-stocked during the entirety of Horizon Zero Dawn as long as you down’t shoot arrows haphazardly.

Horizon Zero Dawn takes place in the 31st Century, with mankind’s future still uncertain. Thin pockets of humanity left in the world live in small tribal-like populations with limited access to technology. Most religions in this new world order revolve around the sun and nature, while our technologically advanced civilization is colloquially known as the “old ones.”
These aforementioned tribes inhabit different sections of the world. The Nora Tribe are fierce hunter-gatherers who live in the mountains and worship nature, known lovingly to them as “All-Mother”. This is the first tribe you encounter in the game.
In the dry, choked deserts lie the Carja, who are city builders and worship the sun. High up in the North lie the Banuk; a motley band of shamans and hunters who adore machines. The final tribe are the Oseram, who are well-known for their metalworking – and arguing.
In between these tribes lie vast stretches of rolling hills, abandoned settlements and breathtaking vistas. These areas are dominated by large robotic creatures known as machines.
Although they peacefully coexist with humans, a phenomenon known as the “derangement” has prompted a lot of these machines to grow more aggressive and attack humans. Even worse, larger and more deadlier versions of these machines have started to appear.
