EVE Online is a MMO “open world” game set in space with an ever present PvP element. Be what and who you want. There are various types of missions often used to improve reputations with Races, Factions and Corporations.
My most common role is or was manufacturing and selling. I mine and gather my own materials if I can. Wars are fought and ships are lost, miners are destroyed by pirates, pirates die too, I am the guy who tracks them down and supplies items and ships to keep the neverending circle turning. I have also worked as a Hauler.
I am not an EVE Guru, just an average player who has been around, on and off, since 2009.
